Pantherophis obsoletus

Area: The southwestern of the United States

Length: max. 180 cm

Feeding: rodents, most mice or rats

English name: Earthsnake

The earthsnake is comparing to the cornsnake a lot bigger, powerful and has more strength. They are normally easy to handle, but they are stronger. Only with the sunspecie lindheimeri I always had trouble. They always try to bite me.

With the subspieces of Earthsnakes there are a lot of colour, albino and leucistic variations. Every year there will become more. The baby earthsnake is larger then a baby cornsnake. Babies always eat live pinkies. Later you can turn them at dead mice.

Upkeep: The earthsnake is easy to keep. The temperature is day over 27 degrees, at night 22 degrees. As substrate we use wood strings on the bottom. A big shelter is needed. They also like to climb. A branch in your shelter is a good idea. You can use artificial plants and a little piece of wood. A large water dish makes it complete.

Breeding: They needs a winter sleep in the months November, December and January (till 15 degrees). They mate in the spring and they lay eggs max 16.

You can incubate the eggs in wet vermiculite. The incubation time will take from 60 till 62 days, at an average temperature of 28/29 degrees.
